Legalize Ferrets in California: A Historic Opportunity

Updated: Jul 27, 2025

After decades of outdated restrictions, Petition 2025-003 is officially on the docket to remove ferrets from California’s Prohibited Species List—thanks to the tireless advocacy of Pat Wright and LegalizeFerrets.org. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is expected to hear the petition around August 11–12, and now is the time to rally expert support.

We need veterinarians, biologists, wildlife experts, former animal control officers, and shelter professionals to submit letters and testify via Zoom (honorarium available). This is more than a policy change—it’s a chance to correct a nearly century-old injustice and ensure the ferrets in CA receive the care and support they deserve.

  1. Spacious Cage or Enclosure: Ferrets are active creatures that need plenty of space to play and explore. Make sure to provide a cage or enclosure that is spacious enough for your ferret to move around comfortably.

  2. Bedding: Ferrets love to burrow and snuggle, so provide them with soft and cozy bedding to make them feel secure and comfortable. Look for bedding specifically designed for ferrets to ensure their safety.

  3. Quality Food: A balanced diet is essential for your ferret's health and well-being. Look for high-quality ferret food that is rich in animal protein and low in carbohydrates. Avoid foods with high amounts of grains and fillers.

  4. Water Bottle: Ferrets can easily tip over a water bowl, so it's best to provide them with a water bottle attached to their cage. Make sure to regularly clean and refill the water bottle to keep your ferret hydrated.

  5. Litter Box: Ferrets are naturally inclined to use a litter box, so provide them with a suitable one in their cage. Use a dust-free, clumping litter that is safe for ferrets and scoop it daily to keep their living environment clean.

  6. Toys: Keep your ferret entertained and mentally stimulated with a variety of toys. Look for interactive toys, tunnels, and balls that allow your ferret to satisfy their natural instincts to play and explore.

  7. Grooming Supplies: Ferrets have a unique musky odor and require regular grooming to keep their coat healthy and shiny. Invest in a ferret-specific shampoo, nail clippers, a brush, and ear cleaners to keep your ferret looking and feeling their best.

  8. Harness and Leash: Take your ferret on supervised outdoor adventures with a harness and leash. This allows your ferret to safely explore the great outdoors while ensuring they stay close by and out of harm's way.

  9. Hideouts and Hammocks: Ferrets love to have cozy spaces to nap and relax. Provide them with hideouts, hammocks, and tunnels in their cage to create a comfortable and enriching environment for them.

  10. Veterinary Care: Regular veterinary check-ups are essential for your ferret's health. Find a veterinarian who is knowledgeable about ferrets and schedule annual wellness exams to ensure your furry friend stays healthy. By providing your ferret with these must-have products, you can help create a safe, happy, and enriching environment for your beloved pet. Remember to always research and educate yourself on proper ferret care to ensure a fulfilling and healthy life for your furry friend.
